Propane tank left on?

My noob roommate used my grill last week, and I just went out to use it and noticed the valve had been left open this whole time. I don't really know for sure, but I just figure since gas and fire are used in this machine that it's safest to leave it off, but can anyone clarify for sure? Also is it possible that it's been using gas this whole time?
