Girlfriends parents want us to get married before living together? Is this a cultural issue? What to do?

There are many parents from many cultures and from many countries who do not want their child living with a boyfriend/girlfriend without the commitment of marriage. I would think it would be even more so for her as she will be so far away from family, friends, and her entire support system.
